Is Christianity and Church still relevant today?

Why can't I just believe anything? As technology, travel and the media make the world seem smaller, people in the West are increasingly able to pick and choose preferred lifestyles and belief systems. People believe things for all sorts of reasons - peer pressure, personal experience or a magazine article. But does it matter what people believe?

Jesus came into a very multi-cultural world, similar to our own. The streets of first century Jerusalem were crammed full of Jews, Roman soldiers and officials, Africans, Arabs, Greeks and Chinese. Each had their own gods and systems of belief. In such a culture, Jesus dared to declare: "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No-one comes to the father [God] except through me." (John 14:6)

Jesus once asked his followers this provocative question:"Who do people say the Son of Man is?" They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets." "But what about you?" he asked, "Who do you say I am?" Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven" (Matthew 6:13-17).  If you think about it that is quitean amazing claim!  Was he arrogant or speaking the truth?

If we look around we probably have to admit that the world around us is in a mess.  Our nation is increasingly struggling for answers to the crime epidemic. The divide between rich and poor seems to widen. The world is getting warmer. Meanwhile, we stuff our bodies with junk food, and our minds with junk TV - the new opium of the people - and pretend everything's OK.  Everything's not OK. We've lost our way. We've lost God.

Jesus came to deal with our biggest problem - ourselves - and bring us back into a relationship with God. From that place of being at peace with God, we can begin to address the pressing social and spiritual needs around us. Without being right with God, we have little power to change anything, because the problem is within us.

More and more people are asking the big questions about life, death and meaning. What is God like? How can I know God? What happens after death?  The Alpha Course is for people asking those questions and willing to consider whether Jesus has anything relevant to say about them today. What about you? What do you think? And why?

Why not explore more about the Christian faith and the big questions of life at our next Alpha Course...you won't be the only one with lots of relevant questions!
